The eventual fate of the collection has already caused controversy in Mexico amid fears it may be damaged en route to Spain.
Works by Ascribed to Manohar, Mughal India and Mahmud [IBN Ishaq] Al-Shahabi were among the 86% of lots selling above their low estimate at Christie's 'The Mary and Cheney Cowles Collection of Indian Painting and Calligraphy' auction on April 28 in London. The sale totaled $7.15m (GBP5.28m), exceeding the pre-sale high estimate.
The painting was one of three stolen from an Italian museum last month.
Gradel first alerted the museum to the thefts in 2021 - two years before its own investigation.
Jacques Lipchitz, Baigneuse, is due to be sold at Sotheby's in New York on May 20, 2026 with a $600,000 to $800,000 estimate.
