The ruins of Pompeii may sound an unlikely home for Pop art but the Roman city is about to become just that.

Thirty of Philip Colbert's Lobster sculptures will go on display throughout the remains of the city near Naples which was destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD preserving it in tons of volcanic ash.

The show, which will run until November, will be Colbert's largest-ever installation and will also extend to the nearby Bronze Age remains of Longola which were damaged in a much more modern tragedy when they were targeted by arsonists.

Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the archaeological park around Pompeii, said the gesture would show how "art helps to heal the wound caused by the arson attack that struck the site a few weeks ago".

New York's extreme weather shut down the New Museum this weekend with reports of leaks inside the building which recently had an $82 million expansion.

Storms brought flash floods to the city with reports of museum staff using buckets to contain leaks and mopping up gallery floors, but no works were damaged.

The building on the Bowery, which only reopened in March, has previously faced scrutiny with reports of some work not finished properly in its rush to reopen.

In a comment posted on Instagram, the museum said the "extreme weather in New York City" prompted the closure and thanked visitors for their "understanding".

The museum recently announced Massimiliano Gioni will take over as director next month from longtime boss Lisa Phillips.

Rotterdam's Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen only installed Wim T. Schippers' peanut butter floor 11 days ago but it has already proved a sticky issue for visitors.

The museum reported at least one person walked on it with another dropping their phone in it while trying to take a photograph.

Staff spread around 390kg of peanut butter across a hexagon on the floor of the museum's depot building in tribute to its creator who first exhibited it in 1969 and who died last month.

The artwork, which will stay in place until September 6, has had problems during previous installations. In 2011, the museum sent four visitors a bill for its restoration after they damaged it.

The safe arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum was greeted with delight in Paris and London but it would not be a surprise if there were similar sentiments in the town of Reading 40 miles west of the UK capital.

The publicity machine behind the forthcoming show has done wonders for the less well-known Reading Museum which is home to a 19th-century copy of the famous embroidery telling the story of the Norman invasion of England in 1066.

Such is the demand Reading Museum has increased its Bayeux Tapestry tours from once a week to three times a week and they are selling out weeks in advance.

A spokesman for Reading Borough Council, which owns the museum, said: "There has been a 6.5% increase in visitor numbers to the Museum so far in 2026 compared to the same period in 2025."

1 - The Barber Institute of Fine Arts is set to reopen in the second half of next year after renovation works paid for by a $19.9 million fundraising campaign. Highlights from the collection, which is part of the University of Birmingham in the English Midlands, are on show elsewhere including London's Courtauld Gallery while the work goes on.

2 - Frank Gehry's monumental Icehenge glass desk could end up in a museum after being sold at auction for $243,200 last week. Auction firm Freeman's told the Chicago Sun Times the anonymous buyer wants to maintain "public access to Icehenge and is considering a temporary loan to a suitable museum or institution".

3 - Two works by Nam June Paik and one by Sigmar Polke will be returned by South Korean business giant Wooyang Industrial Development to the widow of its former boss after a court ruling in Seoul. The original claim demanded the return of 188 works held in the Wooyang Museum of Art but the vast majority will stay where they are.

4 - Kevin Tervala has joined the Minneapolis Institute of Art as chief of curatorial affairs and exhibitions. He was previously chief curator at the Baltimore Museum of Art.
