Five monumental Anselm Kiefer paintings will stay on show at St Louis Art Museum despite a major exhibition of his work coming to an end.
The German artist agreed the works, which are between 27 and 31-feet-tall, can stay on view in the museum's Sculpture Hall to Spring 2027.
Around 150,000 people saw them during the official run of the show, Anselm Kiefer: Becoming the Sea, which closed on Sunday.
Two of the paintings were inspired by a trip up the Mississippi River made by Kiefer during a visit to the city in 1991 to install a show at the museum, known to locals as SLAM.
Its director Min Jung Kim said the show "deeply resonated" with visitors and Kiefer agreed "the extension was important to allow more St. Louisans and more visitors to our community to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime, immersive art experience.”
