Intensely grey, with small areas of white, red, pale yellow and black, ‘Cage 5’ (P19-5, 2020) is at once opaque and richly suggestive. A Giclée printed edition after Gerhard Richter’s eponymous painting, the present work scales down Richter’s original work to one meter square, transforming the vast canvas into a particularly intimate visual experience. Part of the artist’s ‘Cage Paintings’ (2006) series, conceived as a tribute to the experimental composer John Cage, ‘Cage 5’ is a unique and complex composition that explores the autonomous expressive potentials of paint.
