The densely textured surface of Gerhard Richter’s ‘Cage 4’ (P19-4, 2020) seems to invite and resist interpretation in equal measure. The grey paint that dominates the composition has been scraped back in many places to reveal brightly coloured sublayers, in ripples of red, white and yellow.
