900 Paintings

What results from this energetic practice are glimpses of the cherry blossom trees, cropped views of their sprawling branches and gravity-defying blossoms. This intentional and careful use of framing to create more intimate experiences for viewers has long been part of Hirst’s practice, stretching back to his infamous formaldehyde sculptures.

As the artist said, ‘I just want it to be in your face. I want you to feel like you’re too close to it, you know. All the work Iʼve made — you know, the sharks, everything, all that sort of stuff — I want it to be aggressive and in your face. I want you to have a physical reaction to it.’

Format

Continuing on from his large-scale 'Cherry Blossoms' paintings, Hirst explores a much more intimate scale for the Paper Blossoms. In these two new formats, Hirst’s cropping becomes even more focused, bringing the viewer that much closer to the trees and deeper into his extravagant scenery.

The Paper Blossoms series features 900 works in two sizes. The 300 large works, titled and numbered PB1–300, measure 84.2 x 59.6 cm. The 600 smaller works, PB301–900, are 59.6 x 42.1 cm.

The paintings are oil on card, mounted on birch ply frames, with canvas webbing around the edges. Each of the Paper Blossoms is signed and titled by Damien Hirst in oil paint on the verso. The artworks can be hung any way up.

To ensure a fair and broad distribution, 'Paper Blossoms' are being sold on an application basis for a limited time only. If you would like to purchase a work, click ‘Apply Now’ and fill out the application form.
