Keith Cunningham: The Lost Master
In this HENI Talks film, Damien Hirst, Peter Doig, Sir Frank Bowling, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Sir John Hegarty, amongst others, celebrate Keith Cunningham (1929–2014), a painter of astonishing skill, widely admired by peers and mentors alike, and uncover the artist's "Lost Masterpieces".
Cunningham was a revered contemporary of Francis Bacon and Frank Bowling, a group that would go on to define post-war British art, and trained at the Royal College of Art in the 1950s alongside Leon Kossoff and Joe Tilson.
Unlike his contemporaries, however, Cunningham walked away from the spotlight. By the late 1960s, he had turned his back on the public art world entirely, and for more than four decades his talent was known only to a circle of insiders — but unseen and undistracted Cunningham quietly created some of the most powerful and uncompromising works of post-war British art enjoyed by some of the most influential artists and critics of today.

A leading figure in the revival of figurative painting, Peter Doig (born 1959) has given the 21st century some of its newest icons. His solitary figures, ethereal landscapes, night scenes and otherworldly lights, reflect century-old modernist questions, while suggesting a new visual language suited for the uniqueness of the contemporary experience.
Like his nineteenth and early twentieth century predecessors, Peter Doig draws his inspiration from his everyday life. His subjects come from his immediate world : the view from his studio window, a passerby, scenes from his commute into Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago), his wife, and children. Doig reconstructs these places and moments from memory and snapshots that he has taken with his mobile phone.
Damien Hirst was born in 1965 in Bristol and grew up in Leeds. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths college from 1986 to 1989, and whilst in his second year, he conceived and curated the group exhibition, 'Freeze'. The show is commonly acknowledged to have been the launching point not only for Hirst, but for a generation of British artists.
Since the late 1980s, Hirst has used a varied practice of installation, sculpture, painting and drawing to explore the complex relationships between art, beauty, religion, science, life and death. Through work that includes the iconic shark in formaldehyde, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991) and For the Love of God (2007), a platinum cast of a skull set with 8,601 flawless pavé-set diamonds, he investigates and challenges contemporary belief systems, and dissects the uncertainties at the heart of human experience. In April 2017, he presented his most complex project to date, 'Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable', across two museum spaces in Venice. Hirst lives and works in London and Gloucester.
Since 1987, over 90 solo Damien Hirst exhibitions have taken place worldwide, and he has been included in over 300 group shows. In 2012, Tate Modern, London presented a major retrospective survey of Hirst's work in conjunction with the 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Hirst's other solo exhibitions include Qatar Museums Authority, ALRIWAQ Doha (2013-2014); Palazzo Vecchio, Florence (2010); Oceanographic Museum, Monaco (2010); Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (2008); Astrup Fearnley Museet für Moderne Kunst, Oslo (2005); Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples (2004); Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, Pinault Collection, Venice (2017), amongst others. His work features in major collections including Tate Collection; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Fondazione Prada; Astrup Fearnley Museum and the Broad Art Foundation. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1995.
Hans Ulrich Obrist (b. 1968, Zurich, Switzerland) is Artistic Director of the Serpentine Galleries, London. Prior to this, he was the Curator of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Since his first show 'World Soup (The Kitchen Show)' in 1991 he has curated more than 300 shows.
So far in 2018, Obrist has co-curated at the Serpentine Galleries a solo show for Rose Wylie. In 2014 he curated the Swiss Pavilion at the 14th International Architecture Biennale in Venice, where he presented 'Lucius Burckhardt and Cedric Price --- A stroll through a fun palace'; the building was designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron, and the program was developed with artists Liam Gillick, Philippe Parreno, Tino Sehgal and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster. Obrist's Art of Handwriting project is taking place on Instagram and is a protest against the disappearance of handwriting in the digital age.
In 2013, Obrist co-founded with Simon Castets the 89plus, a long-term, international, multi-platform research project, conceived as a mapping of the digitally native generation born in or after 1989. In 2011 Obrist received the CCS Bard Award for Curatorial Excellence, in 2009 he was made Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and in 2015 he received the International Folkwang Prize for his commitment to the arts. Obrist has lectured internationally at academic and art institutions, and is contributing editor to several magazines and journals.
