Damien Hirst

The Currency, launched in July 2021, is a collection of 10,000 NFTs which correspond with 10,000 original artworks by Damien Hirst. Collectors were given the choice to either keep the NFT or exchange it for the physical artwork.

Every choice made – to keep the NFT, or keep the painting – had consequences. Collectors that chose to claim a physical artwork had to burn their NFT to do so. Similarly, those who chose to keep their NFT did so knowing that the physical artwork would then be destroyed. The exchange period closed on 27 July 2022 resulting in just over half the collectors (5,149) deciding to keep the physical artwork, and 4,851 to keep the NFT.

Artworks Format

Overlaps are classified as spots that touch each other or sit on top of each other. A higher rank means more overlaps.

Drips are classified as small specks of paint, splashes, or trails. A higher rank means more drips.

Texture relates to the surface and texture of the paint. A higher rank means that the paint has more texture.

Density is classified as the amount of spots in close vicinity to each other. A higher rank means a higher density of spots.

Weight is classified as the amount of grams an individual artwork weighs. A higher rank means a heavier weight.

Characteristics Rank

Blues are scored as a percentage which represents the proportion of pixels in that artwork. A higher rank means more blue pixels.

Reds are scored as a percentage which represents the proportion of pixels in that artwork. A higher rank means more red pixels.

Yellows are scored as a percentage which represents the proportion of pixels in that artwork. A higher rank means more yellow pixels.

Greens are scored as a percentage which represents the proportion of pixels in that artwork. A higher rank means more green pixels.

Magentas are scored as a percentage which represents the proportion of pixels in that artwork. A higher rank means more magenta pixels.

Blacks are scored as a percentage which represents the proportion of pixels in that artwork. A higher rank means more black pixels.

Whites are scored as a percentage which represents the proportion of pixels in that artwork. A higher rank means more white pixels.

The number of words that appear in the title.

The number of characters that appear in the title.
