Their goal was to turn away from the “ethnographic lens”—the news imagery of famine and war that dominated media coverage of Africa—in favor of the artistic voices that defined African photography, from the gracious studio portraiture of midcentury Mali to the poetic, long-form reportage of David Goldblatt and Santu Mofokeng in South Africa.
