French artist JR is taking time off from wrapping the Pont Neuf in Paris in his monumental tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude to set up a slightly smaller installation for the Venice Biennale.
He will unveil his modern take on Paolo Veronese’s The Wedding at Cana on the facade of the city's Venice Venice Hotel on the Grand Canal from May 5 to 9.
The original 1563 painting, now in the collection of The Louvre, was created for the monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice.
Its modern counterpart includes photographs of 176 chefs, volunteers and guests from the Refettorio Paris charity which runs a community kitchen making thousands of cheap meals from food that would otherwise be wasted.
Visitors will be able to use the artwork's own dedicated digital platform to hear the voices of each person in the fresco and the story of their involvement in the project.
JR, whose Caverne du Pont Neuf runs in Paris from June 6 to 28, said he wanted the Venice installation to become "a necessary space of encounter where beauty ceases to be a privilege and becomes a
shared human experience".
