Famous faces and strong sales helped make the first day of Frieze Los Angeles a success.
The biggest reported sale of yesterday's VIP opening went to David Zwirner Gallery which sold Njideka Akunyili Crosby's 2016 work Grandmother’s Parlour to a European foundation for $2.8 million as well as a work by Lynette Yiadom-Boakye for $1.5 million.
The Art Newspaper reported David Kordansky Gallery making more than $2.4 million across the board while Pace Gallery reported sales of $1.8 million with more than half of that coming from the sales of a
Jean Dubuffet painting for $475,000 and Emily Kam Kngwarray’s 1990 painting Transition which went for $450,000.
Hollywood collectors were out in force with celebrities including actors Fiona Shaw and Emma Watson among those spotted.
Lisson Gallery boss Alex Logsdail told ArtNews the fair was busier than he expected but said he thought it had benefited from "LA's moment" as the art scene rebounds from last year's fires.
The city has also been boosted by the planned opening of LACMA's David Geffen galleries and the soon-to-open Lucas Museum founded by filmmaker George Lucas and his wife Mellody Hobson.
