Yinka Shonibare, Alison Saar and Hank Willis Thomas are among the latest beneficiaries of a project set up more than 20 years ago to bring contemporary art out of galleries and museums to find a wider audience.
Their work is on show along with that of 14 others at San Francisco's Fort Point - a civil war-era fort by the city's landmark Golden Gate Bridge.
Black Gold: Stories Untold is inspired by the lives of African Americans in California in the middle of the 19th century and includes monumental sculptures such as Shonibare's Man Moving Up and Willis Thomas' Solidarity which features a huge clenched fist as well as smaller, more intimate work.
The show, which opened this month, is curated by Cheryl Haines as part of the For-Site project which brings artists to work on US national park land.
She told Forbes the fact admission to Fort Point was free made the show different to one in a museum or gallery, saying: "If we can take these art projects and meet people where they stand, I think it's much more powerful because it's a joint discovery".
