The separate lives of Todd Gray have come together at last in a new show in his hometown of Los Angeles.
For decades he balanced a career as a music writer and photographer with his work as an artist but the two worlds have collided in Todd Gray: Church and State which just opened at The Brick.
Its title comes from the phrase his artist wife, Kyungmi Shin, used to describe his attitude to the two parts of his life.
Gray, who was personal photographer to Michael Jackson, told the LA Times when he was hired to shoot the cover of a Bobby Brown album he hid the news from his classmates at the California Institute of the Arts, saying: “I didn’t tell anybody."
The new show includes more than 100 of his album covers alongside three huge collages inspired by his research into colonialism.
It is curated by the Brick’s director Hamza Walker and runs to January 16.
