Among the the hundreds of millions of Americans and billions worldwide who watched the Apollo 11 Moon landing on television on July 20, 1969, was Andy Warhol.
He went on to commemorate astronaut Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin raising the US flag on the lunar surface with his Moonwalk screenprint, an edition of which sold for more than $464,000 at Phillips in 2024.
Last week, the Pop artist’s cumulative sales topped $1m, in large part driven by the demand for his editioned works.
That was despite a 1967 screenprint of Marilyn Monroe going unsold at Christie’s, while Forum Auctions failed to find a buyer for a Shoes screenprint despite its dusting of diamonds.
The two misses were outweighed by the 26 Warhol works that found buyers last week in sales in New York, London, and Tokyo, bringing in a total of $1,035,000, according to HENI News data.
As Warhol said: “Good business is the best art.” But sometimes even the most bankable of artists comes back down to earth.
