Christie's came out ahead of its major rival after London's marquee sales week, according to the HENI Auction Index
Their five sales totaled just over $334 million including fees, 57% above the historic average, with the number of lots also up 14% scoring Christie's a B on the index which uses more than 10 different metrics to measure success.
The same calculations saw Sotheby's only score a C- with its sales total of $75 million 60% below the historic average despite 222 lots which was a nearly 4% increase compared with previous marquee sales.
Christie’s results were boosted by one consignor, the founder of the Monsoon retail chain Peter Simon, whose single-collection evening and day sales accounted for more than 46% of the auction house’s overall total.
Sotheby's suffered from a 5% fall in the share of works selling for above their high estimates compared with previous marquee weeks.
