A series of large multipaneled paintings by Lubaina Himid will show "the UK in a clear, contemporary light" at this year's Venice Biennale.
Further details of her show, called Predicting History: Testing Translation, have just been released ahead of its opening on May 9.
The British Council's Emma Dexter, who commissioned the pavilion, said Himid used "dazzling color, layered sound and narrative" to show "the UK as a space of both possibility and tension".
She added: "This exhibition explores what it means to belong, challenging dominant histories and representing the UK in a clear, contemporary light – open, complex, and shaped by many voices."
It also includes a "surreal soundscape" created in collaboration with Magda Stawarska.
Himid is not the only major female UK artist making a splash in Venice this year with previously unseen work by Jenny Saville going on show there next month.
It is her first major show in the city and includes work from the start of her career in the 1990s with around 30 paintings including a room of new work created "in homage to the lagoon city".
Her show opens on March 28 and closes on November 22 when the biennale also ends and is at
the Ca' Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art.
