The Art Institute of Chicago must be kicking itself at missing out on the chance of a blockbuster show.
KPop star RM credits the Midwestern institution with sparking his interest in collecting during a 2018 visit while on tour with his group, BTS, but it is the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art that snared the first-ever show of around 145 works from his collection.
How did they do it? Simple, they asked. He told the New York Times they were "really serious" about it from the outset and proved "they understood me — what I love and what I’ve been pursuing."
The show, which opens on October 3, includes work by artists including Kim Whanki, Chang Ucchin and Lee Daiwon and is likely to bring a whole new audience to the California museum with his fanbase including his 53.6 million followers on Instagram.
Its director Christopher Bedford said, with some understatement, the South Korean singer would bring "ideas about collecting and audience engagement that go far beyond what museums do conventionally".
