What is in a name? Around $257 million if it is the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

That is the expected cost of a renovation program that remains in doubt after the center abruptly closed its doors yesterday following what was reported to be a bad-tempered board meeting with President Donald Trump and Democrat politician Joyce Beatty trading what the New York Times described as "personal attacks".

The result was a vote to close the building, named after assassinated US President John F Kennedy, for a two-year-renovation which the President said will only go ahead if a court decision not to put his name on the building is reversed.

The center's official Instagram account said the building's "critical infrastructure" was failing and also posted a video showing a collapsed ceiling in the main hall.

A spokeswoman for the center said the renovations were "long overdue and desperately needed to protect the safety of patrons, artists and staff", but Beatty branded the move unlawful and accused the president of "holding the Kennedy Center hostage unless he can put his name on this sacred memorial".

Tate Modern has revealed more details about its Claude Monet show which it says will be the largest exhibition of his work in the UK for almost a decade.

The 2027 show in London will span 60 years of his career and reveal how he reacted to a new world where industrialization and the rise of the railways shifted society's perception of time.

Among the works on show are rarely seen loans from private collections such as his 1897 Branch of the Seine near Giverny (Sunrise) and a view of Saint-Lazare station in Paris borrowed from the Art Institute of Chicago.

Monet: Painting Time will run from February 25 to June 27 and close with an immersive video by Ange Leccia inspired by his final Water Lily paintings which are permanently housed at the Musee de l’Orangerie in Paris.

New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art has broken ground on its Frida Escobedo-designed $670 million Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Wing.

Museum director Max Hollein said the five-story wing, which will have 69,500 square feet of exhibition space and open in 2030, would "transform how we present 20th- and 21st-century art".

The Tangs added to their reputation for philanthropy earlier this year when they gave 150 works of contemporary Native art, including pieces by Helen Hardin, Allan Houser and Jaune Quick-to-See-Smith, to the New York Historical.

The temptation for museums to play their greatest hits in terms of exhibits can be overwhelming, but Vienna's World Museum is striking out with a show of objects rarely on public display.

Part of the Hidden Stories exhibition, which opens today and runs to May 30, features contemporary art from Pakistan.

It comes from a collection donated to the museum by a former United Nations employee who lived in the country and bought work by graduates from Lahore's National College of Arts including Salima Hashmi and Quddus Mirza.

Museum director Claudia Banz said the exhibition would "offer a glimpse into the diversity of our collections and show that every object is far more than just an exhibit".

4 - Bhutanese mixed-media artist Pem Lham has won this year's Rubin Museum Himalayan Art Prize. The New York museum gives the annual $30,000 award to a contemporary artist from the Himalayan region.

5 - London's National Portrait Gallery will host the first major posthumous exhibition dedicated to Frank Auerbach next October. The gallery, led by director Victoria Siddall, will also host shows next year of American Impressionist Mary Cassatt and English Pop artist Peter Blake.
