A New York Buddhist center is at least $281,600 better off after a Ugo Rondinone sculpture led Sotheby's Contemporary Discoveries auction.
It was one of 373 lots sold over a week making a total of $7.7 million.
The Rondinone piece was sold to raise money for the Padmasambhava Buddhists Center which had previously been supported by his partner, poet and activist John Giorno, up until his death in 2019.
It comes as Sotheby's was reported to have had total revenue for the first six months of the year of $4.4 billion.
That puts them just behind its main rival, Christie's, which reported a figure of $4.5 billion.
Christie's said it was its best first half results in five years. $1 billion of that was from private sales but strong auction performances saw increases in metrics including the number of bidders per lot and sell-through rate.
