The founder of a new London arts center dedicated to work by global majority artists says she wants it to be "a brave space" rather than a safe space.
Lina Lazaar is creating a physical space for the online platform Ibraaz - which means ‘to shine a light on’ in Arabic - in a 10,000 square foot Grade II listed building at 93 Mortimer Street in central London.
It opens on October 3 with an exhibition, Parliament of Ghosts, by Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama which was previously seen at the 2019 Manchester International Festival and the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale.
There will also be talks, screenings, music nights and a library, cafe and bookshop.
Lazaar, an art critic whose father Kamel Lazaar was also a philanthropist, said: “At a time when so many are seeking safe spaces, our aim is to go one step further – to build a brave space that offers cultural experiences which not only address the issues of our time but also envision the futures we can create together."
