A stolen work by Pablo Picasso is at the heart of a legal battle after it was found more than 60 years after its theft.

The Guggenheim Foundation is going to court to recover the 1918 painting Femme dans un fauteuil which was taken in 1961 while on loan to the University of Pittsburgh and is now valued at around $3.5million, according to Hyperallergic.

Recent research found it was sold by a now-closed New York gallery in 1999 and the foundation wants its new owners to give it back.

Its spokesperson said: "The Guggenheim is and always has been the painting’s rightful owner, and we look forward to its recovery."

The age of the oldest surviving fragment of Homer's Odyssey which has gone back on display in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Vincent van Gogh's signature works are the subject of a new study by the Amsterdam museum dedicated to his life and work.

Researcher Julia Engelmayer examined all the painter's signed works which only corresponds to 133 of his 840 known paintings or around 15%.

Her study found he was more likely to sign paintings he was particularly proud of such as The Potato Eaters and Sunflowers or if he was giving them as gifts for family or friends.

It also showed how the presence of a signature ebbed and flowed with his mental health. No paintings made before 1884 were signed as he regarded them as practice for his later career and many of his later works were also unsigned after his belief in his own talent receded after his admission to a psychiatric hospital.

A series of never-before-seen paintings and sketches by award-winning novelist Iris Murdoch go on show today after being found hidden in a secret attic room.

They were discovered at the late writer's former home in Oxford, England, by Dr Miles Leeson, the director of the Iris Murdoch Research Centre at the University of Chichester.

He told the Guardian the door to the "inaccessible" room had been hidden behind a book shelf and not opened in years.

Murdoch, who died in 1999, won the UK's Booker literary prize for her 1978 novel The Sea, The Sea. She was played by Kate Winslet and Judi Dench in an Oscar-winning biopic based on her husband's memoirs.

The works can be seen in a free exhibition at the university until December 10.

Eight Henri Matisse engravings stolen last year from a Brazilian library have been found by police.

The works, illustrations for the painter's book Jazz, were recovered in a house near Sao Paulo this week.

One man arrested at the scene is expected to be charged with receiving stolen goods and possession of an illegal weapon.

The pictures, worth around $200,000, were taken in broad daylight by a gang of thieves who targeted an exhibition in the Brazilian city. Five works by Brazilian artist Candido Portinari stolen at the same time have not been recovered amid fears they have already been sold.

1 - Jean-Michel Basquiat's Blue Ribbon paintings form the heart of a new show of rarely-seen works by the artist opening next year at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia. The show, which will run from February to May 16, looks at his printmaking and the influence of other artists from Robert Blackburn to Robert Rauschenberg.

2 - Anna Katz starts work on Monday as the Doris and Donald Fisher Senior Curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. A former curator at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, she is the first person in the new role which was endowed by the Fisher family at the institution which is home to the vast collection built up by the couple.

3 - Next year's Frieze Seoul fair will take place at the Zaha Hadid-designed Dongdaemun Design Plaza while its current home, the COEX convention center, is redeveloped. The 2026 fair, led by director Patrick Lee, runs from September 2 to the 5th with more than 125 galleries from over 30 countries taking part.

4 - It is back to Eastbourne for Martin Clark who is taking over as director of the Towner Gallery in the south-coast English town in the New Year. Currently in charge at London's Camden Art Center, Clark worked with Towner staff while on the 2023 Turner Prize jury and was previously director of Norway's Bergen Kunsthall and Tate St Ives.

5 - Two works by US TV presenter painter Bob Ross sold for more than 10 times their low estimates this week. Mountain Waterfall and Mountain Landscape each fetched $406,900 at Bonhams Skinner's American Art sale on Wednesday. Read more here.
