A photograph by Hollywood actress-turned-revolutionary photographer Tina Modotti sold for six times its low estimate in New York this weekend.
The 1927 work, Bandolier, Corn, Sickle, was one of the stars of the Phillips photography sale on Saturday selling for $645,000 - well above its low estimate of $100,000.
Italian-born Modotti worked as a model and actress in the United States before moving to Mexico City where she took up photography and revolutionary politics before her death, aged 45, in 1942.
The sale was a bright spot for the auction house after its spring sales in Hong Kong fell flat only scoring a C- on the HENI Auction Index.
The index, which uses more than 10 different metrics to measure success, showed the two sales totaled $11.3 million with fees which is nearly 60% down on its most recent comparable sales in the city.
The number of works consigned fell nearly 18% from its most recent sales and was about 13% below the norm.
