The queen of performance art Marina Abramovic has gone back to first principles and picked up a pencil again.
Abramovic, whose show at the Galleria dell'Accademia in Venice ends on Sunday, is famous for her wholehearted commitment to her work.
Her performances have seen an audience member put a loaded gun to her head while she sat silently opposite members of the public for more than 700 hours at New York's Museum of Modern Art for her show The Artist is Present.
She told the Times of London she has now started drawing again, having given it up aged 23, saying: "I love drawing. Every concept and idea I have starts with a drawing."
Abramovic, who turns 80 this year, said her work is benefiting from her slowing down and no longer appearing at every show.
She said: "In many ways I become an obstacle to my own work. People want to see me, they take selfies with me. But what they actually have to do is look at the work."
