It is only 19 words long but a caption attempting to give some context to the character of Mickey Mouse has caused even more trouble for the beleaguered Smithsonian Institute.
Fox News reported Donald Trump's administration was not impressed by a display at the National Museum of American History called Entertainment Nation which included a wall label about the 1928 cartoon that saw Walt Disney's creation make his debut.
It read: "The new character’s outsized facial features, white gloves, and trickster temperament were vestiges of longstanding traditions of blackface minstrelsy."
That prompted Lindsey Halligan, the lawyer tasked by the president to investigate the Smithsonian, to tell US journalists the display was "part of the problem" and that "framing American culture as inherently violent, imperialist, or racist does not reflect the greatness of our nation".
The Smithsonian has come in for regular criticism since the new administration came to power. The director of the National Portrait Gallery, Kim Sajet, was forced to resign in May after the president publicly said he had fired her for her pro-DEI beliefs.
