Paris's newest arts center is preparing to open on the site of a former car factory 20 years after Francois Pinault abandoned his plans to build there, but not everyone is welcoming its arrival.

Art collector Laurent Dumas is the man behind the institution, called Le Large, which is built on the remains of a huge Renault car factory on the island of Seguin and is set to open on October 17 - one week before Art Basel comes to the city.

Le Monde said the opening of the center and another planned by chef Alain Ducasse in a listed public building in the northwest of the city were a result of central Paris "having become saturated" leading to "the contemporary art and luxury sectors taking over iconic working-class sites".

Both developers insist they will acknowledge the history in their new homes with Ducasse promising free exhibitions and events and Le Large opening with a nod to its factory past - a show celebrating how artists have been inspired by the automobile.

Yinka Shonibare’s 1998 work Mr. and Mrs. Andrews without their Heads will go on show with the Thomas Gainsborough painting that inspired it for the first time.

It can be seen with Gainsborough's 1750 portrait of the newly married couple in London's National Gallery from October 5.

Shonibare, who first saw the original painting while at art college, said he was "drawn to it as an icon of Britishness" and "never expected my work to be shown alongside it".

His work, which replaces the original couple's pastel clothing with African prints, is on loan from the National Gallery of Canada, Ottowa.

1 - The director of the Drents Museum in the Netherlands has appealed for the return of the final piece of the haul of Romanian gold stolen last year. Robert van Langh said the return of the last of three armbands, stolen along with the golden helmet of Cotofenesti, would mean "only then can this terrible period really be closed". Three men have each been jailed for three years and 11 months for their part in the crime.

2 - The photography that captured the fashions of Yves Saint Laurent is going on show in New York this week. Works by Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz and Helmut Newton are among those featured in the show at the city's International Center of Photography from Thursday.

3 - Tone Hansen is stepping down as director of Oslo's Munch museum to take over at Sweden's Moderna Museet. She will start in her new role at the museum, which has sites in Stockholm and Malmo, on September 1 having been in charge in Norway since 2022.

4 - Jean-Michel Basquiat and Georgia O'Keeffe are among 10 artists being commemorated with giant 10-foot silhouette sculptures in a walkable exhibition in Chicago. The sculptures are on show all summer on the campus of the College of Du Page as part of the celebrations for the United States’ 250th anniversary.

5 - Staff at London's Goldsmiths College have gone on "indefinite strike" from today as the institution wrestles with budget cuts. Famous for its art school, alumni include Sarah Lucas, Steve McQueen and Gillian Wearing.
