There is good timing and then there is opening a museum dedicated to the intersection of art and oil just as the world is brutally reminded of its dependence on the black stuff.

Saudi Arabia's Black Gold Museum opened its doors this week in the Zaha Hadid-designed King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) in Riyadh with more than 350 works by artists from Manal AlDowayan to Alfredo Jaar.

The kingdom's museums commission said it "reinterprets the history of one of the world’s most prominent natural resources through contemporary art" with works including Wim Delvoye's hand-carved truck tyre tasked with telling the story.

Minister of Culture and member of the ruling family Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan said the museum was "an important milestone in the arts sector and global cultural discourse" and would provide "an unprecedented space for reflection and critical thought".

The proposed budget to build a new arts center in the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles that will provide homes and studio space for formerly jailed artists. It is the idea of painter Fulton Leroy Washington - known as Mr. Wash - who served 21 years in prison for drug offenses.

Michael Landy is presumably hoping his vision of a ruined Sir John Soane's Museum does not come true until at least January 17 when his show at the London institution finishes.

Landy has drawn the museum along with the New York Stock Exchange and President Trump's Mar-a-Lago home as ruins for the show which opens on October 14.

The show, called Future Ruins, is inspired by a work from the museum's collection - Joseph Michael Gandy’s painting of the Bank of England as a Roman ruin which was commissioned by Soane in 1798.

The museum director Will Gompertz said Soane and Landy shared a "a dark romantic notion of the ruin" and hailed both men as "titans of the pencil".

Jiajia Zhang has won this year's Art Vontobel Contemporary Photography Prize.

The Chinese-born, Zurich-based artist wins $25,000 and a solo show in the Swiss city and catalogue for her project which used fragments of film and found images to create a visual letter to her own daughter called And in 2084, You Are 62.

The title is a reference to the theme of this year's competition which invited artists to think about what Switzerland will be like in 60 years time.

The jury said her work "distinguished itself through a quietly powerful shift in perspective" and praised the "strength of her artistic practice and the emotional clarity of her vision".

1 - Auction house veteran Frank Lasry has been appointed chief operating officer at Frieze. Lasry started out at Christie's and worked in London, Paris, Dubai and Hong Kong before joining Phillips and was also previously managing director at Art Basel.

2 - The death has been announced of Christine Ruiz-Picasso aged 97 at her home in Provence, France. The widow of Pablo Picasso's son Paul, she was the driving force behind the museum dedicated to the artist in the city of his birth, Malaga, and was its honorary president.

3 - It has been quite the week for Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Only yesterday morning he was making headlines when his extension to the Saint-Maurice Cathedral in Angers was criticized as resembling a "reinforced concrete UFO". A few hours later he was named as the winner of the competition to design the new multi-million pound wing of London's National Gallery, beating five other architects to the prestigious job.
