Kehinde Wiley said his offer to buy back one of his paintings taken down from a US embassy after being dubbed "aesthetically terrifying" has been ignored.
The painting, Young Artists After Siamesas 1960, was removed from the building in the Dominican Republic.
Ambassador Leah Campos posted a video of its removal, soundtracked by the song "We're Not Gonna Take It' by heavy metal band Twisted Sister, and said it represented "turning away from globalist and woke ideologies and instead embracing American patriotism".
Wylie told The New York Times there had been "no response" to his offer but he was not "terribly surprised".
The painter also said he did not intend to "incorporate" recent events in his personal life, which include accusations of sexual misconduct which he denies, into his work because he does not "want to see my practice affected by that."
He told the newspaper reported falls in the prices paid for his work were nothing to do with the allegations, instead putting it down to a lack of demand for the wall-size paintings he makes.
