The Japanese artist Hisachika Takahashi, who has died aged 85, was a man of many talents.
He arrived in New York in 1969 and became Robert Rauschenberg's long serving assistant. Takahashi’s duties overseeing the artist's SoHo studio included taking care of Rauschenberg’s pets and plants.
As well as helping Rauschenberg until his death, Takahashi also left his mark on New York’s culinary scene. When he was an occasional cook at the artist-run restaurant Food, he introduced sushi to the menu.
He did not travel directly from Japan to the US, however. First he sailed to Venice where he met the artist Lucio Fontana and became his assistant for two years.
In later life the Japanese artist divided his time between Vermont and Paris and his own work came to the fore. His paintings and print works blended traditional Japanese techniques with modern abstract styles, including collage.
The artist’s solo show is currently on view at the Empty Gallery in Hong Kong (until August 23), organized by his Tokyo-based gallery, Misako & Rosen.
