The bounce back in the market is not confined to modern and contemporary art - the Old Masters are getting in on the act as well.
Strong results from Christie's three Old Masters auctions this week in London scored a B+ on the HENI Auction Index, up from a C last December and its strongest score in the past six years.
The three sales totaled $34 million with fees, only half the size of a typical Old Master winter week at Christie's, but performed strongly by other metrics used by the index which does not just rely on sales revenue.
Among the positives was the percentage of works selling above their low estimate including Gerrit Dou’s The Flute Player which soared past its estimates, selling for just over $5 million with fees.
The share of lots beating their low estimates jumped from 62% last December to 74%, the highest level ever recorded by the Index for these sales.
