Move over Whistler’s mother, Edgar Degas’s father will have his moment soon, sort of.

Cremona in Italy will play host to an exhibition in the fall celebrating the birth of the modern guitar. The star of the show will be the Aubry-Maire guitar depicted by Degas in his 1871 painting of his father listening to the Spanish musician Lorenzo Pagans.

The painting of Pagans and Auguste de Gas is not due to travel from the Musée d’Orsay, which recently lent it to a show in Tokyo. Nor is a related work by Degas in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston due to go to Italy.

Visitors will be able to hear the historic guitar, however. There will be a concert in Cremona’s Civic Museum on October 3, the Italian publication Finestre sull’Arte reports.

The art and music extravaganza should help make Cremona a strong contender for Italy’s capital of culture in 2029. It is one of 17 municipalities announced this week to be in the running for the honor.

The number of galleries taking part in the inaugural Art Week NYC, which is due to take place November 11–14, along with the rescheduled ADAA Fair.

Charles Ray will go the extra mile in Kassel. The seventy-something US artist returns to the museum in the German city where in 1992 he took part in the prestigious exhibition documenta 9.

The Fridericianum opens a solo exhibition of his work on August 22, his first major museum show in Germany, and the artist plans to be there in person to lead visitors on a guided tour.

Details of what is in the Kassel show are under wraps, but it promises to be a mix of intimate works and monumental sculptures. Ray will be accompanied by Bernhard Mendes Bürgi, the former director of the Kunstmuseum Basel in Switzerland, which presented Ray's critically acclaimed career survey more than a decade ago.

Forget swanky dinners. Sprüth Magers is celebrating ten years in Los Angeles by throwing a summer party this week in what was once its local Sizzler, a traditional steakhouse on Wilshire Boulevard.

The celebratory pop-up will feature 22 video works, including a piece by Otto Piene, which will remain on view through August 15.

Gallerists Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers have come a long way since they joined forces in 1998 in Cologne, with spaces in Berlin, London, and across the street from LACMA since 2016.

4 - Bruce Nauman brings life on the ranch to the Nasher Sculpture Center in downtown Dallas this fall. His exhibition, opening in September, features polyurethane, silicone rubber, and plaster-cast forms of animals common in New Mexico, where the artist has lived and worked since the 1980s.
