Melbourne's National Gallery of Victoria opens its major Margaret Preston show today with more than 250 paintings on view but it is missing one thing - some lobsters.

A 1901 still-life featuring the crustaceans is the only one of four missing works museum staff failed to find while planning the show dedicated to the Australian modernist who died in 1963.

It was last known to be in an Adelaide private collection, but mystery surrounds its whereabouts after it failed to turn up after a two-year search.

The show also includes contemporary work by First Nations artists including Tony Albert, Trevor Nickolls, Deanne Gilson and Gordon Bennett.

Rotterdam's Fenix art museum has only been open just over a year but has already announced its first expansion.

The museum, dedicated to art inspired by migration, will open a new 650 square meter gallery for temporary exhibitions by contemporary artists.

Its first show Mouthfool runs from November 19 to May 9 and is the first major exhibition in the Netherlands devoted to arts collective Slavs and Tatars.

The museum, based in an old docklands warehouse, welcomed more than half a million visitors from over 100 countries in its first year.

The organizers of the Gwangju Biennale said it was "embarrassing" China has quit the event after controversy over the naming of Taiwan's exhibition.

China pulled out yesterday after the South Korean organizers agreed to let the Taiwanese exhibition be titled the Taiwan Pavilion.

The president of the biennale foundation, Youn Bum-mo, told reporters he had wanted the Chinese pavilion to stay.

He said: "It's embarrassing, and I'm sorry that we've ended up in an uncomfortable relationship with China."

The event opens to the public tomorrow and runs to November 15.

An historic San Francisco gallery has been saved from closure after California Governor Gavin Newsom intervened.

The politician, a former mayor of San Francisco who has been widely touted as a potential presidential candidate, stepped in after reading SF Camerawork was about to close after more than 50 years.

His intervention led to a guaranteed $1 million in state funding over the next two years which co-founder Hal Fischer said would give the gallery "breathing room".

He told the San Francisco Chronicle: "We’re using the money as an opportunity to get more money, and to really create a long-term stabilization program."

1 - The Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art in Medzilaborce, Slovakia, has reopened after its $18.5 million renovation. The building, just a few miles from the village his parents emigrated from, also holds work by Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Robert Indiana and Banksy.

2 - Mexican critic and curator Cuauhtemoc Medina has been put in charge of the 25th edition of Guatemala's Bienal de Arte Paiz which will run from November 2027 to February 2028. A former curator of Latin American art at London's Tate Modern, Medina was chief curator at Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (Muac) in Mexico City from 2013 to 2024.

3 - China's Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art has opened to the public. The Bjarke Ingels Group-designed building features 12 pavilions beneath a continuous roof inspired by the city's UNESCO-listed gardens.

4 - Three works by Paul Cezanne, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri Matisse that were stolen from Parma's Magnani-Rocca Foundation have been returned and gone back on show. They were unveiled at an official ceremony this week after Italian police recovered the works valued at around $10 million.
