Brooklyn Museum director Anne Pasternak has withdrawn plans to sack around 15 staff members after a $2.5 million injection of funds from the New York City Council.
The initial plan to cut around 47 staff sparked protests by unions and pressure from local politicians, but some workers did lose their jobs before the money was found in the city's annual budget.
The council said the money was intended to "maintain current staffing levels, develop a robust philanthropic pipeline, and create a sustainable plan for the future".
The museum previously warned its deficit could reach $10 million by summer, when it announced the initial plans to cut jobs.
Founded in 1823, it is the second largest museum in New York city and its collection of around half a million objects includes work by artists including Mark Rothko, Judy Chicago and Max Weber.
