Who would not want their picture hanging in their nation's portrait gallery?
The answer appears to be Australian billionaire mining magnate Gina Rinehart whose portrait has been returned after a disagreement over how it should be displayed.
Rinehart, said to be Australia's richest person with a personal fortune of around $26 billion, gave the painting by Alix Korte to the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra seven years ago.
But the Sydney Morning Herald reports it has been "quietly returned" after the two parties "failed to reach an agreement over the legal terms of the gift".
Speaking in 2024, gallery director Bree Pickering said they had been given a "specific set of instructions regarding its display and added most "people tend to be happy to have their painting in the gallery".
A spokesperson for the gallery was more conciliatory this week, saying it "recognizes the generous offer of the gift by Mrs Rinehart" and keeping open the possibility another portrait of her may still find its way into the collection.
