Caravaggio's Asian tour continues with another first.

The work Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy, which was attributed to the artist a decade ago, has gone on show at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) in New Delhi - the first time Indian audiences have been able to see a work by the Italian master.

Businesswoman and philanthropist Kiran Nadar set up KNMA - India's first private museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art - in 2010.

The loan of the Caravaggio from a private Dutch collection is part of an initiative, supported by the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute in New Delhi, which has seen the painting go on show in Mongolia and China with a forthcoming stop planned in Thailand as well.

Congratulations and commiserations to artist Jason Phu who lost and won a prominent Australian art prize at the same time.

Let us explain: he is among 57 artists shortlisted for the $64,000 Archibald Prize which is awarded annually for the best portrait of an Australian subject distinguished in art, letters, science, or politics.

But before the main prize is awarded, staff at Sydney's Art Gallery of New South Wales hand out their own internal version - the more modest $1,900 packing room prize.

Phu, shortlisted for his portrait of the actor Hugo Weaving, was beaten to that by fellow nominee Abdul Abdullah who submitted a portrait of Phu.

Both men are still in the running to win the main prize which is announced on May 9.

Mystery surrounds the latest painting in London's National Gallery's collection with experts admitting they do not know who painted it, where or when.

The renaissance altarpiece was bought for £21.8 million in a private deal brokered by Sotheby's but the gallery admits "its authorship is unknown" and even the nationality of the painter is "up for debate".

Its experts have only been able to roughly date the work, called The Virgin and Child with Saints Louis and Margaret, to around 1510 by dating the wood used for the panel and examining the design of a chain worn by one of the figures.

It will go on display from May 10 as part of C C Land: The Wonder of Art, the Gallery’s biggest and most ambitious rehang of its collection displays and the opening of the newly transformed Sainsbury Wing.

3 - Carmen Herrera's early years in Paris are the subject of a new show at the Lisson Gallery on West 24th Street. The show, which opens tonight, features work created in the French capital by the Cuban-American artist between 1948 to 1953.
