Who among us has not confused a museum exhibition of $7 million of ancient gold treasure with a car showroom?
That is apparently what happened to one unnamed Romanian man questioned by Dutch police after the theft of the solid gold helmet of Cotonesti and three gold armbands from the Drents Museum in the Netherlands in January.
He was questioned as a witness, according to police documents seen by Dutch broadcaster RTL Nieuws, after being spotted by security cameras in the museum five days before the robbery.
Asked to explain why he entered without a ticket and wandered around the exhibition called Dacia: Empire of Gold and Silver, before being escorted out by security, he told police he thought it was a Dacia car showroom.
Three Dutchmen are due in court tomorrow in relation with the theft. None of the stolen artifacts have been found and last month Romania collected $5.8 million in insurance for the loss of the treasures which were on loan from its National History Museum in Bucharest.
