Willem de Kooning, Two Figures in Dunes (1968) sold for $3.22m, more than twice the low estimate at Sotheby's in New York on May 13.
The sale beat the previous auction result for this work by $3.02m, equivalent to an annualized return of 9%. It last sold at auction in 1993 for $200,000 at Sotheby's.
