What to See in Vienna During Art Week: Erwin Wurm’s Big Birthday and Monster Chetwynd Conjures Up Moths and Witches

Every fall, Vienna Art Week sees a wealth of events and exhibitions taking place across Austria’s capital but this year is extra special. As the festival marks its 20th edition. Here are five must-see shows and where to find them.

Amoako Boafo has a major show at the Lower Belvedere (until January 12, 2025). In addition, the Ghanaian artist, who studied in Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts, also has works on show at the Upper Belvedere, hung alongside paintings by the likes of Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt.

Erwin Wurm celebrates his 70th birthday with a retrospective at Albertina Modern, the first comprehensive retrospective of the Austrian artist’s absurdist work. Until March 9.

For Robert Longo’s power charcoal drawings, head to the Albertina Museum, which has organized a survey of the US artist’s work. On view until January 26, 2025.

Adrian Ghenie takes his cue from Egon Schiele’s lost paintings in another special exhibition at the Albertina Museum, until March 2, 2025.

Monster Chetwynd’s solo exhibition at Belvedere 21 sees the museum taken over by moths, bats, worms as well as heretics and witches, until February 9.
