France’s First Lady, Bridgitte Macron, closely followed by her husband, Emmanuel, were among the VIP visitors to Art Basel Paris, upon which the sun shone, to start with at least. The fair got off to a brisk start in the Grand Palais, with sales described as “effervescent”. Although heavy rain on Thursday led to unplanned rehangs by some dealers. Sotheby’s and Christie’s had reasons to feel positive with sales that exceeded expectations. It was also the week the latter announced a classic Ed Ruscha gas-station painting was heading to auction next month with a reported $50m price tag.
