Thomas Cole, Mount Chocorua, New Hampshire (1827) sold for $1.62m, more than twice the low estimate at Christie's in New York on January 23. The oil on gessoed panel work has been traded 12 times in the past.

The sale beat the artist’s previous auction record by $323,000, a 24% rise.
