Steve McQueen's film installation Grenfell, which the artist made following a fatal fire in a west London high-rise building, heads next to Liverpool. It will presented concurrently at Tate Liverpool and The Bluecoat from May 16 to June 21.
The work, which was first shown in London's Serpentine and the London Museum, focuses on commemorating the victims and survivors while prompting reflection on accountability.
McQueen, who grew up in west London, said in a statement: “I knew once the tower was covered up, it would start to leave people’s minds. I was determined that it never be forgotten.”
Work began demolishing the shell of the building in 2025, starting from the top and moving down floor by floor. There is an ongoing debate about how much, if any, of the ruin should be preserved.
