Sotheby's will present the Jean & Terry De Gunzburg Collection in New York on April 22, which has a total estimate of $67m–$99m.
The sale features works by leading figures across design and fine art. Noteworthy designers include Claude Lalanne, François-Xavier Lalanne, Jean Royère, Alberto Giacometti, Jean-Michel Frank, and Alexandre Noll.
Highlights include an ensemble of mirrors by Claude Lalanne from the Salon de Musique of Yves Saint Laurent and his former partner Pierre Bergé, which has a $10m-$15m estimate.
These pieces are complemented by modern art by artists such as Mark Rothko, Robert Ryman, Agnes Martin, Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso, and Paul Klee.
Terry de Gunzburg spent 15 years at Yves Saint Laurent Beauté, including a number of years as creative director, where she translated the couturier's artistic vision into cosmetics. Her husband, Jean, is a scientist.
The husband-and-wife collectors once described their art and design-filled home as “New York on the outside, Paris on the inside”.
