Aspen Isn't the Rockies' Only Art Hotspot

Aspen is drawing in the A-list crowd this week but elsewhere in the Rockies and across the Pacific Northwest galleries are opening solo shows. Here is our pick.

Diehl Gallery in Jackson Hole (altitude: 6,237 feet, or 1,901 meters) opens a solo show of Susan Brearey’s paintings, aptly titled In the Wilderness, today, July 30. The exhibition, the artist’s debut at the gallery, features her pared-down paintings built through layering and revision.

In Seattle, two solo exhibitions will open on August 1. Ariana Heinzman will present Red Tree in Bright Memory at J. Rinehart Gallery, featuring her ceramic sculptures and paintings. Influenced by children’s book Illustration from the 1960s, and with a nod to the feminist sculptor and painter, Niki de Saint Phalle, Heinzman’s work is a riot of vibrant color and strange forms.

Also on Saturday, Patricia Rovzar Gallery will throw a champagne reception for David French's latest show, Inner Visions. The exhibition features painted constructions by the Mid West-born artist who moved to Seattle in the 1990s after years in Europe.

Meanwhile, in Aspen, the second AIR (Artists in Residence) Festival is in full swing, with Matthew Barney among the leading artists who are drawing collectors and curators to the Colorado resort town.
