Refik Anadol, an artist known for his work with artificial intelligence, is set to unveil Winds of Hong Kong, a new data painting commission for the M+ Facade. This large-scale public art installation will visually represent the city's unique wind patterns, transforming environmental data into a visual representation.
The artwork will be displayed on the M+ Facade at the West Kowloon Cultural District, running from October 14–January 7, 2027. Anadol, recognized for his digital artworks that employ artificial intelligence and large datasets, has consistently explored the intersection of machine intelligence and the physical world.
Winds of Hong Kong continues Anadol's Winds of... series, which uses data aesthetics to make invisible natural phenomena perceptible. The artist, who co-founded Dataland, the world's first museum dedicated to AI art, views data as a malleable pigment and artificial intelligence as a thinking brush. His intention for the piece is to foster a deeper connection with the city's environment.
“Hong Kong provides a compelling context for this ongoing inquiry, with its distinctive climate and environmental characteristics,” Anadol stated. “I hope the work invites viewers to pause, reflect, and experience Hong Kong as a dynamic ecology of movement, energy, and transformation.”
The commission is presented by Julius Baer, a collaboration between M+ and the financial partner to support technology-driven public art in Hong Kong.
