NGV International will host Ragnar Kjartansson: Mercy, marking the artist's first major solo presentation in Australia. The exhibition, running from June 26 to October 4, 2026, will feature a selection of the Icelandic artist's video works, music and performance installations.

Kjartansson's practice is recognized for its distinctive blend of performance art, music, and installation, often exploring themes of humour, melancholy, masculinity, and repetition. His work frequently references classical pastoral painting, romantic ballads, and theatre.

The NGV will also present a free exhibition Children’s Play: Ragnar Kjartansson – the artist’s first exhibition for children.

The son of an actor and a theatre director, Kjartansson grew up surrounded by rehearsals, scripts and backstage activity, so his exhibition invites young visitors into a playful and creative space inspired by the theatre.
