Pierre Huyghe's UUmwelt is due to be unveiled in MoMA's Sculpture Garden on July 1.

Presented on freestanding screens, the work is a collaboration between the French artist and a team of researchers in Japan.

They asked a human subject to imagine a set of images while an fMRI scanner recorded their brain activity. An artificial neural network then used the data from the scans to generate thousands of visual interpretations of what they might have imagined.

The installation expands Huyghe's exploration of systems that challenge traditional notions of perception and interaction within art.

Huyghe has worked with Kamitani Lab, Kyoto University, to create his latest cutting-edge work, which incorporates deep image reconstructions, screens, sensors, sound, and scents.
