Philadelphia Museum of Art to Host First U.S. Duchamp Retrospective in Over 50 Years

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is preparing to host a retrospective dedicated to Marcel Duchamp, the first comprehensive U.S. survey of his work in over five decades. Titled Marcel Duchamp, the exhibition will be presented across the museum's Dorrance Galleries and Galleries 281-283.

The exhibition, which originated at the Museum of Modern Art in New York earlier this year, offers an opportunity to engage with Duchamp's influence on 20th-century art. The French-American artist is recognized for his approach, particularly his concept of the readymade, which challenged traditional notions of aesthetics, authorship, and the definition of art. His practice laid the groundwork for movements such as Dada, Surrealism, and Conceptual Art.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art holds a collection of Duchamp's works, including authorized replicas of works such as Fountain and Bicycle Wheel, which will be featured in the exhibition. The museum's holdings of Duchamp's work contribute to its role in presenting his legacy.

A press preview for the retrospective is scheduled for Thursday, October 9, ahead of its public opening on October 10. The exhibition is slated to run through January 31, 2027.
