Peter Beard, Waterbuck Family on the Uaso Nyiro/ for The End of the Game/ Last Word from Paradise (1997) sold for $105,600 (GBP81,300), more than two and a half times the low estimate at Phillips in London on April 10.
The sale beat the previous auction result for this work by $36,900, equivalent to an annualized return of 4%. It last sold at auction in 2015 for $68,800 at Christie's.
Unique mural-sized work, comprising a toned gelatin silver print with blood, ink, watercolour, tempera paint, original drawings by the artists kivoi mathenge and e. mwangi kuria of the hog ranch art department, ephemera collage and affixed feathers and leaves, in the original driftwood frame, 148.0 x 249.0cm. The work has been traded 4 times in the past.
