Paul Delvaux, Nuit de Noël (1956) sold for $3m (GBP2.34m), more than twice the low estimate at Christie's in London on March 5.
The sale beat the previous auction result for this work by $2.45m, equivalent to an annualized return of 4%. It last sold at auction in 1986 for $545,100 at Sotheby's.
Oil On Masonite In The Artist'S Painted Frame, 126.5 x 176.4cm. The work has been traded once in the past.
