Frank Stella's Costa Mesa (1967) sold for $2.16m, 24% above its low estimate at Bonhams Cornette de Saint Cyr
A classic 1967 work by Frank Stella was among the top lots in a bumper week of sales in Paris in the first week of June.
Costa Mesa sold for $2.16m with fees at Bonhams Cornette de Saint Cyr, providing the lion's share of its post-war and contemporary sale's total of nearly $6m on June 4.
The auction house's revenue that week totaled $9.9m, while Christie's Paris two sales the day before totaled $7.9m.
On June 3, Sotheby's held a single-collection sale of works collected by the French-Romanian industrial chemist Fred Feinsilber, which totaled $5.4m. When Artcurial's $2.4m is added, the city's overall week of sales totaled more than $25m.
While not spectacular when compared to auction weeks in New York or London, the sales of modern and contemporary art were bouyant while much of the city's focus was on the spring sales of Asian art and antiques.
