Paleis Het Loo in Apeldoorn has announced the opening of 'State of Wander: Towards Environmental Restoration,' a contemporary art exhibition running from 17 April to 27 September 2026. The exhibition, featuring site-responsive works by a roster of national and international artists, examines themes of royal heritage and environmental restoration within the palace's historic context.
Artists contributing to the exhibition include Antye Guenther, Bryony Dunne, Caitlin Berrigan, Clemens Driessen, Teodora Cecilia Buccilli, Edward Clydesdale Thomson, Gayatri Kodikal, Jan Christian Schulz, Marianna Maruyama, Rob Voerman, and Terike Haapoja. Their contributions span various mediums, such as ceramic and sculptural installations, sound art, augmented reality narratives, scent installations, and textile art, many designed to engage directly with the palace environment.
The curatorial approach delves into complex intersections of ecological systems, cultural heritage, and colonial history, framing environmental restoration as a multidisciplinary endeavor. The works engage with the historical context of Paleis Het Loo, prompting reflections on the impact of human intervention on natural environments.
The exhibition is curated by Anna Bitkina, Annette de Vries, and Renske Ek. Concurrently, a related presentation titled 'The Grand Staircase' will be on view from 16 April to 30 August 2026.
